Portuguese “surveillance” and Ring security cameras are highly compatible. Both are engaged in the task of observing external activities around a residence in real-time.
A favorite quote of mine is “Don’t worry about what I’m doing. Worry about why you’re worrying about what I’m doing.” Being social creatures, many individuals possess a desire to monitor others for various motives, although the more prevalent ones appear to be negative in nature—curiosity, comparison, competition, envy, and gossip. These behaviors can be perceived as intrusive and bothersome, potentially straining relationships due to a disregard for personal boundaries and privacy. As an empathetic and very intuitive individual, I possess the ability to immediately detect insincerity, envy, competition or nosiness in others. As I get older, I’ve noticed a significant decrease in my tolerance for such behavior, and I’ve developed a skill for effectively establishing emotional and physical distance in those circumstances.
For a considerable part of my life, I dedicated extensive energy and time to relationships with others that lacked reciprocity. I wholeheartedly supported and celebrated their significant life moments and achievements, but when it was my time to receive the same support in return, it often fell short. I once came across a passage that conveyed a similar sentiment, expressing something like their jealousy doesn’t arise from a desire to attain the same thing for themselves; rather, it stems from a reluctance to see you have it.
In today’s age of social media, access to everyone’s personal information is just a click away. However, in recent years, I made a deliberate choice to limit the amount of my personal life that I share both online and in person with others, and it has had a significant positive impact while keeping evil eye at bay. Sincerely checking up on the well-being of others is different from being nosy. It is important to reach out to people and show them that we care. However, we must remain aware of our own motives and intentions, ensuring that our actions stem from actual genuine concern and support.
I titled this photo “Portuguese surveillance” and it is part of my travel photography exhibition, titled “Portugal 41,”.
