Life’s journey with baggage

On a chilly November day in Nazaré, a coastal fishing village in Portugal known for its big waves and surfing, I captured this moment in time. During the winter months, the streets become quieter as the tourist crowds disperse, leaving behind a serene atmosphere empty of bustling beachgoers, crowded restaurants, and charming shops showcasing local handmade items.

As I rounded a corner onto one of the narrow streets, I was instantly struck by the uncanny resemblance of a woman to my own Portuguese grandmother. The memory of my grandmother often wearing a shawl draped over her head and shoulders flooded my mind. With only a split second to react, I swiftly snapped the picture before the woman noticed my presence, understanding that any acknowledgment could alter the impact of the image. While framing the shot, I couldn’t help but observe the multitude of details that unfolded before me – her weathered face, stooped posture, the burden of heavy bags she carried, the worn-out house slippers she wore from traversing those cobblestone streets, and a sizable water bottle to stay hydrated. Her expression conveyed a sense of sadness and defeat, as if she bore the weight of both literal and metaphorical burdens.

I titled this photograph “Life’s Journey with Baggage.” Baggage, in its literal and metaphorical sense, acts as a barrier, slowing us down and weighing us down. It transforms life’s journey into a tiresome endeavor, contributing to feelings of depression, sadness, and even physical ailments. When we think of travel, we are often advised to “travel light,” recognizing that excess baggage comes at a cost. Yet, many of us cling tightly to unnecessary baggage, unwilling to let go. This principle extends to all aspects of life. Numerous individuals find themselves trapped, carrying burdens they were never meant to bear. It is crucial to abandon these burdens and forge ahead with ease, remembering to also stay hydrated both physically and metaphorically.

This photograph is part of my travel photography exhibition, titled “Portugal 41,”.
